Consumer Sentiment: Hopeful Yet Hesitant
December brought a surge in consumer sentiment, reaching its highest level in nine months, according to the University of Michigan’s Survey of Consumers. This optimism stems from:
- Holiday Spending Boost: Positive holiday shopping trends lifted current economic outlooks.
- Election Aftermath: Post-election confidence surged, especially among certain political groups.
However, the future sentiment index dipped, reflecting caution about inflation and economic uncertainties. Consumers remain concerned about potential price increases and are wary of near-term challenges.
Employment Rebounds but Questions Remain
The labor market showed resilience in November, adding 227,000 jobs, bouncing back from hurricane and strike-related disruptions. Key highlights include:
